Factors to Consider When Choosing a spearfishing Mask

You can access a comprehensive summary of all this by clicking on “Summary.” We have also provided some examples of masks recommended by experts for beginners to start underwater fishing. However, you must understand the reason for choosing each feature individually.

The first and most important feature to consider when choosing your mask is

  • Tempered Glass Lenses:

Your mask must have lenses made of tempered glass. If not, don’t risk losing your eyes, my friend. To put it more plainly, in the event of incidental effects or pressure changes, regular glass won’t withstand the pressure and will break. When it breaks, I don’t need to tell you what will happen. Invest in goggles made of tempered glass, which is more durable and resistant to breaking than regular glass. This feature is of paramount importance, so take heed.
  • Choose a comfortable spearfishing mask:

    • Silicone Skirt:

An adjustable and elastic strap that allows you to secure the mask comfortably on your head.
    • Skirt Comfort:

A soft and leak-resistant skirt that offers a good seal without excessive pressure on the face.
    • Adjustability:

The ability to make simple adjustments while diving for maximum comfort.
    • Finding the Perfect mask for Your Face:

A mask that fits your face shape and size well, providing a comfortable feel against your skin. (Don’t worry; we will discuss this topic further in the last paragraph, ‘Finding the Perfect Fit for Your Face.‘)
  • Streamlined Design:

As spearfisher, we don’t need these masks:
    full-diving mask
    full face diving mask

Some will ask who will use these, and some may laugh at these images, but I don’t blame them at all. Some beginners don’t know much about spearfishing, I see them they use these masks (of course, the fisrst one 😂) .So,When choosing spearfishing mask, you need Simple design mask to reduce drag while spearfishing, and moving stealthily underwater. If you’re looking to invest more, I recommend investing in low-profile spearfishing mask like these:

    Low-Volume mask

This makes it easier to clear them of water and reduces the effort required to achieve balance while diving.

  • Nose Pocket:

Some specialized masks lack a nose pocket for those who dislike masks with a nose pocket. However, most spearfishers prefer masks with nose pockets, and I personally find them more suitable and comfortable, especially for those who engage in frequent diving. So, when you choose a mask, you need to make sure of this.
  • Camouflage Patterns:

It’s not necessary, but if you wish to blend into the ocean environment and prevent startling fish, contemplate selecting a spearfishing mask with suitable camouflage patterns for your specific hunting environment. This can enhance your likelihood of success ,like this :

Or at least, when choosing your spearfishing mask, refrain from selecting ones that permit light entry to promote eye health and improve visibility.

  • Tinted Lens Mask:

If you plan to use the cave hunting technique or dive in poorly lit areas, I don’t recommend choosing this type of mask. However, one day, a seasoned spearfisher told me that fish fear human eyes. I didn’t believe it at first until I tried it myself and indeed noticed the difference. Fish do fear human eyes, and when you wear this type of mask, you conceal your eyes from the fish. You can see it, but it can’t see you.

  • Wide Field of Vision:

Some people prefer choosing masks with a wide field of vision for spotting prey and navigating underwater easily. Currently, I don’t own one, but I find complete comfort in my current mask. I might consider getting one for myself in the future.
  • Anti-Fog Coatings:

Some masks feature anti-fog coatings on their lenses, which prevent condensation and ensure clear vision during dives. Frankly, when I was a novice, I wasn’t aware of masks with anti-fog coatings. I had spent a substantial amount on various products that claimed to prevent condensation and maintain clear vision, but they proved ineffective (especially for beginners). I discovered that a simple method, like spitting inside the goggles and rinsing with water, was more efficient during my early days. We’ll discuss strategies for preventing condensation and maintaining optimal visibility in a dedicated article. However, if you have the means, consider choosing a mask with anti-fog-coated lenses.
  • Prescription spearfishing Masks :

If you have visual impairments but still wish to enjoy underwater spearfishing, it’s essential to choose a spearfishing mask that can accommodate prescription lenses, ensuring clear vision underwater. Therefore, when selecting your mask, you should inquire and confirm whether these masks can accept prescription lenses.

The Difference Between Framed and Frameless Masks :

Both frameless and framed masks are commonly used in spearfishing, but each has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. It’s essential for a spearfisher to choose the mask that best suits their needs.

The Frameless Mask:

One of the primary differences is that the frameless design features a single glass front panel directly molded into the mask skirt, which is the soft silicone that seals the mask to your face. In framed masks, the rigid frame holds the glass or lenses, and the skirt is molded onto this frame, not the glass panel itself.

As spearfishers, we require masks with exceptional visibility and low volume, featuring a unique design and construction. The frameless design is the ideal choice for providing superior visibility.

What are the Advantages of frameless masks?

Expansive, unobstructed views: Once you experience the wide underwater vistas, you’re unlikely to return to framed masks

Alleviating claustrophobia: If you’re new to the sport and feel discomfort underwater, it’s better to use a frameless mask

What are the disadvantages of frameless masks?

Despite the exceptional visibility frameless masks provide, the mask’s frame can add weight and volume to it.

Why Spearfishers Love Low-Volume Masks?

Spearfishers prefer low-volume masks for a crucial reason. When we dive underwater, we only go a few meters deep using our breath. With increased depth, water pressure rises, causing the air inside our masks to compress, resulting in the mask pressing against our faces.

To prevent this, we exhale slightly into the mask using our noses to compensate for the lost volume. If the mask has high volume, it would require more wasteful use of our precious breath to balance the mask. In contrast, a low-volume mask has less airspace to manage .

The Framed mask :

What are the Advantages of Framed masks?

Framed masks offer a compact size, enhanced flexibility, and a lightweight build, making them ideal for travel and easy transitions between locations.

What are the disadvantages of Framed masks?

One method for achieving a low-volume mask design involves significantly reducing the size of the glass lenses. As a result, beginner spearfishers may find that these masks provide a more restricted field of vision underwater

Briefly :

Frameless Mask :

ProsCons
Superior field-of-vision
Ultra-comfy skirt seal
Fewer leaks
Easy to clear
Less mask squeeze
More expensive
Skirt can separate from glass over time
No prescription options
Weaker strap clips
Can feel “flimsy”
Pros and cons Frameless Mask

Framed Mask :

ProsCons
More durable
Accommodates prescription lenses
Less expensive
Sturdier strap clips
Tried and true design
Heavier
Less flexible skirt seal
Poorer field-of-vision
Higher volume difficult to clear
Frame can put uncomfortable pressure on brow
Pros and cons Framed Mask

The Difference Between single and double lens :

In short, This is what matters to us as spearfishers

Single Lens Masks:

  • Wide field of vision.

Double Lens Masks:

  • Prescription lens compatibility
  • Easier to find a replacement lens

Finding the Perfect Fit for Your Face:

Inhale gently through your nose. If the mask adheres to your face without manual support, the mask skirt forms a secure seal on your face.

Here are some additional tips for selecting a mask that suits your face:

  • Check if the mask skirt fits snugly around your eyes, ensuring both the outer and inner seals make consistent contact.
  • Test the seal by gently squinting or making slight movements with your cheek and lip muscles. Ensure it doesn’t release too easily.
  • Ensure the mask skirt is comfortable and provides enough space for your nose. (I assure you, it’s not about your nose, but rather selecting a mask that fits comfortably.)
  • Position the mask with the strap in place, resting the strap higher on your head, just below the crown, and not directly above your ears. Avoid over-tightening to prevent potential leaks or skin marks.

Tip: If you have facial hair, it’s advisable to shave before performing this test or using your mask in the water. To enhance the seal, apply a mask sealant or a non-petroleum-based product (like chapstick) to the mask skirt.

conclusion

In conclusion, choosing the right spearfishing mask is pivotal for an extraordinary underwater experience. Prioritize fit, visibility, and comfort to enhance your dives. Armed with the knowledge from our guide, you’re ready to explore the depths with confidence. Happy spearfishing!
